Ian Birthistle is a fully chartered senior counselling psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI), and a graduate of University College Dublin (UCD) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Ian has over thirty years of experience in individual and group counselling and psychotherapy, and his expertise includes: Addiction, Depression, Anxiety, Panic, Stress, Anger Issues, Grief and Loss, Relationship Difficulties, Self-Esteem, Work and Life Issues, among others. He has worked with a wide range of clients with diverse difficulties from Employment Assisted Programs (EAP) with solution focused therapies in large corporations, with business directors to young adults and with clients with severe emotional difficulties to those wishing to explore a better way in which to live.

Ian has worked in St John of Gods, and with heroin addicts in Clondalkin Addiction Support Program (CASP), where he set up a Fathers of Addicts Support Group which ran independently for over eighteen years. Ian has worked in The Rutland Centre, after which he set up a private practice which for a time before Covid also included walk and talk sessions. He has published research on suicide, male gender role conflict, coping skills, addiction, and on the Fathers Group. He has conducted HSE sponsored research on help seeking behaviours in a drug abusing population, and he has published work on green exercise and his walk and talk sessions. Ian has also written a book on Depression called ‘Tackling Depression’, which was published by Blackhall Publishing in 2010.

Ian’s approach has a humanistic, cognitive and solution focused base. Ian uses a number of varied therapeutic approaches, all depending on the client and their presenting problems. He sees his job as trying to help clients to find their own solutions to manage their own problems. Ian believes strongly in the ability of all people to help themselves.
